St. George’s Golf and Country Club is seeking a highly motivated and career driven individual to fill the role of 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. St. George’s continually strives to be at the forefront of new and exciting technology and practices that keep all individuals involved in the department current and involved within the turfgrass industry. The greens department is currently installing a 1-Million Gallon cistern water holding tank complete with a full irrigation system renovation to Rain Birds IC system. The project will see a new driving range and short game area constructed and the 2nd assistant will play a major role in completing this construction project and grow in.
The 2nd Assistant position will report directly to the Golf Course and Property Manager and Senior Assistant Superintendent. The potential candidate for this position will be involved in all aspects of management decisions in the greens department. The candidate should posses a strong eye for detail and knowledge of the game of golf. The candidate will participate in and be responsible for the following activities:
- Coordinate and schedule daily maintenance plan with the assistance of the Golf Course and Property Manager and Senior Assistant Superintendent for a staff of 42.
- Perform chemical and fertilizer applications to all surfaces as well as maintaining accurate records of all applications and calibrations.
- Assist in monthly inventory record keeping and other administrative duties as required in the greens department.
- Supervise all staff and follow up on scheduled tasks to ensure level of completion has been met or exceeded.
- Building positive relationships with all staff and departments.
- Assist in the hiring and recruiting of all seasonal staff.
- Scheduling of irrigation cycles and water management practices on the golf course.
- Irrigation repair and maintenance practices.
- Assist in the completion of golf course construction projects most notably the current irrigation system installation.
- Will play a key role in training new and returning staff on safe operation of equipment and maintenance practices.
The candidate should posses the following skills and attributes that are integral to providing exceptional playing conditions and department operation:
- At least 3+ years of experience in the golf course turfgrass industry.
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in a Turfgrass Management program or related field of study.
- Posses or will have the ability to obtain in a timely manner an Ontario exterminator’s license and IPM accreditation.
- Extremely detail oriented and understands the importance this plays in providing superior member and guest experiences.
- Team player who excels at fostering a team environment and continually strives to improve the work atmosphere.
- Punctual and posses’ strong organizational skills and methods to stay on task and timely.
- Positive attitude and openness to learning and developing further skills related to their field and personal life.
- Knowledge of the game of golf and the importance of course setup at a private golf facility.
- Willingness to take part in and participate in industry events and committees.
