Ambassador Golf Club was designed by Canadian architect Thomas McBroom and opened for play in 2005. A busy public facility, Ambassador has hosted numerous Championship events including the 2023 OFSAA Men's Golf Championship, 2023 OCAA Championship, 2022 CCAA National Championship, 2020 Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, 2017 Golf Ontario Men’s Amateur, 2016 Golf Ontario Women’s Amateur, 2016 Ontario University Golf Championship and the 2011 Canadian Tour Championship. Currently Ambassador Golf Club is the host venue for the PGA TOUR Canada / Americas Tour's - Windsor Championship. Ambassador Golf Club is looking for an individual to fill the position of Head Golf Course Superintendent.

Job Summary / Purpose:  Reporting to the Director of Golf, the successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual who will be responsible for the overall maintenance of the golf course, the practice areas and general property.  The successful candidate will need to be detail oriented, an outgoing and approachable individual who is eager to train and motivate their staff. The successful candidate must be open, willing, and driven to develop and grow personally and professionally. This is a Management position which requires constant and effective communication with the other members of the Management team.

Responsibilities / Expectations:

  • Ensure that all aspects of the maintenance and care of the golf course area are looked after to a level that meets or exceeds the expected standards of Ambassador Golf Club Management and Ownership.
  • Control and forecast all payroll and expenses associated with the golf course maintenance operation.
  • Schedule, train, supervise and evaluate all personnel hired to the golf course maintenance operation.
  • Maintain accurate work records for all personnel in the department.
  • Supervise all planting, fertilizing, care and removal of turf, plants, shrubs and trees on the golf course.
  • Inspect course regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.
  • Plan any and all future improvements to the golf course, and oversee all construction, maintenance and renovations.
  • Supervises operation of the equipment repair area and Mechanic.
  • Prepare annual budget for department, take corrective action as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met.
  • Prepare and revise the grounds department training manual.
  • Establish short and long-range plans for the golf course.
  • Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation and watering systems.
  • Implement and enforce comprehensive safety program for employees, members, and guests on property in compliance with municipal, provincial and federal laws.
  • Ensure that chemicals, gasoline and other controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with municipal, provincial and federal regulations, maintain required records and strive to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.
  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Golf & Head Golf Professional to discuss conditions of facilities, maintenance plans, scheduled events and the number of rounds played.
  • Attend management meetings.
  • Plan professional development and training activities for the department.
  • Make recommendations for capital improvement and purchases.
  • Ensure proper landscaping for property outside of golf course, including the clubhouse and surrounding areas.
  • Coordinate applicable work with outside contractors.
  • Determine when course should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the course if play continues alongside the Director of Golf.
  • Communicate effectively with other departmental managers and golf shop staff about daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance practices.

Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing of the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association or Ontario Chapter.
  • 3-5 years of Golf Superintendent experience.
  • Turf Management Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid Ontario Landscape Pesticide Application License and have experience in fertilizing and pesticide application.
  • Must hold a Valid Chainsaw Safety Certificate
  • IPM Certification & Accreditation.
  • Experience with Toro irrigation systems an asset. 
  • Knowledge of expense management and budgeting.
  • High attention to detail and highly organized.
