Environmental Coordinator (Spray Technician)

Position overview: Capilano Golf and Country Club is looking to hire an enthusiastic, hardworking and detail orientated person to assume the role of Environmental Coordinator. Capilano has a rich history of developing people within the golf course maintenance industry, with numerous people previously in the Environmental Coordinator role securing an Assistant Superintendent position within and outside the club. The successful applicant will play a direct role in the maintenance of the playing surface to the highest quality. This is a year-round position in which the successful applicant will advance their career, learn valuable skills, get insight into the management of the highest quality playing surfaces, and ultimately prepare them for an Assistant Superintendent role in the future.

 

Capilano Golf and Country Club is a private 18-hole facility established in 1938 with esteemed Canadian golf course architect Stanley Thompson and continually ranks in the top 10 golf courses in Canada. Located in West Vancouver, BC, the course was built on the side of Hollyburn Mountain with spectacular city and mountain views, has excellent access to the North Shore Mountain Range, and is located only 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver.

 

What you will learn:

 

  • Precise application - Perform precise, safe, and timely chemical and fertilizer applications while keeping accurate records and inventory of all products.
  • Research and ordering - Research product pricing and suitability, liaise with suppliers and order products as needed to ensure sufficient inventory is available for scheduled applications.
  • Development - Work directly with the Course and Grounds leadership team in the prioritization and scheduling of all applications to the golf course, forming an understanding of why these applications are being made.
  • Planning - Compose weekly environmental reports, giving your own input on planned applications.
  • Professional representation - Act as an ambassador of the Course and Grounds team within the Club and as a representative of the Club at professional outings.
  • Training - Aid in the supervision and training of the Intern(s) and Assistant Applicators.
  • Lead and educate a small team of support staff in the prioritization, scheduling and communication of all fertilizer and chemical applications.
  • Balanced work environment and time management ­- With a mixture of physical and managerial tasks, you will learn to balance priorities and set goals, preparing yourself for a future management role.
  • Be proactive in seeking out educational opportunities for personal development and keeping up with new products, technologies, and application skills.
  • Government and environmental regulations - Maintain all components of the Club’s IPM program and work towards maintaining the Club’s Environmental Sanctuary status with Audubon International.

 

What we are looking for:

 

  • A degree or two-year diploma in a turfgrass related field from a recognized college or university is preferred.
  • Desire to succeed and exceed standards at an intensely maintained golf course.
  • Willingness to learn and aid in implementing new programs.
  • Efficient use of computers and willingness to use new technology and software.
  • An understanding of golf and how it relates to our operation and membership.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • BC Pesticide License or the ability to obtain one within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Someone who can work alone, in a team, and can thrive with responsibility.

 

Compensation:  Full time, year round work, with a $26.00/hour starting wage that is increased annually. Extended health benefits are included. All PPE, uniform, work boots, gloves and Environmental Coordinator-related equipment are supplied by the Club.
