Overview

Whitevale Golf Club is a private equity golf club founded in 1958 and located in north Pickering.  Offering a high-quality golf experience, genuine hospitality and a family atmosphere, it is a hidden gem just outside the GTA.  The Turf Department’s home is a recently constructed 13,500 square foot facility, with a state-of-the-art practice area and an 18-hole parkland style golf course. The biologically diverse property recently maintained its status as a Certified Audubon Sanctuary, and is managed with a focus on our environmental impact.  A complete bunker renovation begun in September 2024, and is 50% completed.   The remainder of the project will be commencing in the spring of 2025. 

The Assistant Superintendent will report directly to the Superintendent, ensuring a consistent and quality product is delivered to the membership on a daily basis.  He or she will work closely with other senior turf team members (Equipment Manager, Irrigation Technician, Spray Technician) to lead, coach, train, and mentor all staff to achieve established goals within a high performing Team.  The successful candidate will have a willingness to work with the natural environment, promoting a healthy soil food web while producing pristine championship conditions. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in daily scheduling and supervising of all staff members
  • Assist in hands on training for all staff and equipment, record keeping
  • Assist in accurate fertilizer and pesticide applications, record keeping
  • Perform other cultural practices and record keeping as required
  • Quality control for daily tasks performed by the Turf Team
  • IPM scouting and data submission, report generating
  • Moisture management (hand watering, irrigation control, repair and maintenance)
  • Promote a strong Health and Safety culture with JHSC participation or oversight
  • Be available to work overtime, weekends, holidays

 

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a post-secondary Turfgrass Management Program (or equivalent)
  • 2-3+ years of experience in the golf course industry within a leadership role (preferred)
  • Strong planning, organizational and communication skills (verbal, written, body language)
  • Hard working, dependable, efficient, and committed to the turfgrass management lifestyle
  • Aptitude for solving problems, improvising and adjusting priorities 
  • Natural drive and ability to coach, lead, and manage staff with employee development and team success as the overall goal
  • Possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, and Pesticide License (Landscape Exterminator)
  • Possess a Chainsaw Operation License (or willingness to obtain)
  • Experience with irrigation system control, troubleshooting and repair techniques (Toro Lynx considered an asset)
  • IPM Agent status an asset

 

Compensation

  • Full time, year-round employment (target start date is March 1, 2025)
  • Annual base salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience ($60K +)
