Assistant Superintendent

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Turf Management Diploma/Degree or equivalent knowledge and experience.
• Must hold a valid Ontario Landscape Pesticide Application License.
• Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Agent status through the IPM Council of Canada is recommended.
• Knowledge of agronomy and turf grass management practices including the repair, maintenance and operation of a computer controlled electric irrigation system.
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office and relevant software applications.
• Knowledge of any applicable legislation/regulations including the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Minimum of 5 years of related golf course experience, coupled with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
• Previous experience demonstrating the ability to make decisions, problem solve, communicate and display organizational skills.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ADMINISTRATION
• Assist with purchases within approved limits and preparing required documentation for materials.
• Assist in preparing, maintaining, reviewing and controlling daily records, schedules that capture departmental labour hours, staff schedules, overtime allocation, accident reports, IPM records, pesticide and fertilizer records, weather records, inventories of supplies and equipment, etc.
• Implement performance appraisal process for seasonal staff.
• Assist with legislative/legal requirements for Permit to Take Water, Pesticide Act Regulations and IPM Accreditation.
• Assist with ensuring all Health and Safety Regulations/Training requirements pertaining to the operation are met in conjunction with the Health, Safety and Environment Department.


OPERATIONAL
• Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with planning and organizing work with the staff to establish priorities, timing and to determine needs with minimum public/facility disruption.
• Assist with determining and recommending golf course maintenance needs and future requirements including turf grass, landscaping, drainage, and irrigation expansion.
• Assist with the overall golf operations program; communicates operational problems to the Golf Course Superintendent for discussion and resolution.
• Assist with coordinating/implementing and following up on all agronomic tasks/personnel based on daily course requirements.
• Assist Golf Course Superintendent with the implementation of a comprehensive IPM records management program to ensure compliance with Regulation 63-09 of the Pesticides Act.
• Oversee all physical aspects of the irrigation system operation including electric control, satellites, sprinkler performance, repair and maintenance, etc.
• Assist staff with operational duties where required for operational efficiency including fertilizing, cultivation, irrigation, pest identification and control, etc.
• Required to play NPC courses to assess playing conditions and make necessary adjustments.
• Assist with snow removal duties in the winter months.


DIRECTING AND SUPERVISING
• Assist with supervising and co-ordinating work priorities for the Legends on the Niagara turf operations and personnel.
• Assist with ensuring goals and objectives are met including quality, service and productivity standards; assists with planning and facilitates the implementation of fertilizer and pest control product programs.
• Ensures high level of staff performance through staff development, coaching, mentoring, and motivating departmental employees.
• Ensures that workers under their control work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, policies/procedures and provided with the required training and required safety equipment.
• Aids the Golf Course Superintendent in implementing schedules, staff development, training, performance appraisals, counselling and dispute resolution.
• Assigns and follows-up on various projects with staff to inspect progress and completion of work and
provides technical guidance, advice and assistance
to the staff.
• Attends management meetings as required.
