Assistant Superintendent
Position Summary:
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent plays a key leadership role in maintaining and enhancing the golf course and club grounds to meet the high standards expected by our membership. Working closely with the Golf Course Superintendent, this position assists in all aspects of agronomic planning, daily course maintenance, staff management, and irrigation operations.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on, motivated professional who takes pride in delivering premier playing conditions and an exceptional golf experience for members and guests.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Course & Grounds Maintenance
- Assist in daily management of all golf course maintenance operations, ensuring the course is presented at the highest level each day.
- Implement and monitor turf management programs including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, cultivation, and pest control.
- Supervise and participate in the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, roughs, and landscaped areas.
- Scout for turf health issues, disease, and irrigation deficiencies and report findings to the Superintendent.
- Support the preparation and conditioning of the course for club tournaments and special events.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise, train, and schedule the grounds crew, ensuring efficient use of labor and equipment.
- Provide daily direction, coaching, and feedback to staff to promote quality workmanship and professional growth.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, safety, and pride in course presentation.
Irrigation & Equipment Management
- Assist with the operation, scheduling, and maintenance of the club’s irrigation system.
- Strong knowledge of Rainbird irrigation system and repairs is essential
- Troubleshoot irrigation issues and ensure timely repairs.
- Safely operate and maintain a variety of turf maintenance equipment.
Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records of fertilizer and pesticide applications, water usage, and labor activities.
- Assist the Superintendent with budgeting, purchasing, and inventory control.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements related to chemical handling and equipment operation.
Member Service & Communication
- Work closely with the Superintendent and golf professional staff to ensure course conditions align with member expectations.
- Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude while representing the club to members and guests.
- Respond promptly and courteously to member questions or concerns related to course conditions.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred.
- A combination of formal education and relevant golf course experience will be considered.
Experience:
- 2–4 years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance, preferably at a private or high-end facility.
- Proven experience in staff leadership, irrigation management, and agronomic program implementation.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days, Ontario exterminator’s license and IPM agents status.
- Valid Ontario G driver’s license required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of cool- or warm-season turfgrass management (depending on region).
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Proficiency with golf course management systems (e.g., Toro Lynx, Rain Bird, TaskTracker, ASB TaskTracker).
- Dedication to continuous learning and professional development within the turf industry.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and perform physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and operate machinery for extended periods.
