Position Overview:
Reporting to the Senior Assistant Superintendent and Course Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent will play a key leadership role in the daily operation of the Greens Department. Working alongside the management team, this individual will assist with planning, training, and quality control across all areas of the golf course maintenance operation.
This position is ideal for a passionate turf professional early in their career who is eager to learn, lead, and develop within a progressive private club environment. The successful candidate will gain meaningful experience in agronomic planning, staff development, irrigation management, and tournament preparation while contributing directly to the daily conditioning of one of Ontario’s premier facilities.
General Responsibilities:
- Lead and support the greens crew in executing daily course maintenance and cultural practices at a high standard.
- Assist in planning and coordinating daily tasks, providing guidance, training, and feedback to seasonal staff.
- Collaborate with the Senior Assistant Superintendent on staff recruitment, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
- Participate in moisture management of bentgrass/annual bluegrass surfaces, including irrigation operation and hand watering.
- Monitor the Toro Lynx irrigation system to ensure efficient operation and communicate any issues or improvements to the Irrigation Technician.
- Conduct fertilizer and pesticide applications, ensuring accurate calibration and optimal spray performance.
- Scout playing surfaces regularly and maintain accurate records to support agronomic decision-making.
- Collaborate with the management team on agronomic planning and execution of key programs.
- Assist in tournament preparation and daily setup to maintain championship standards.
- Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive team culture focused on learning, communication, and continuous improvement
Qualifications:
- Two-year associate diploma or degree in Turfgrass Management from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of four years of golf course experience, including at least one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
- Possess or be willing to obtain an Ontario Landscape Exterminator Licence (within 90 days of employment).
- IPM Agent status is considered an asset.
- Experience with Toro Lynx irrigation systems is an asset.
- First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
- Chainsaw safety certification or willingness to obtain.
- Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a hands-on approach to maintaining high course standards.
- Demonstrated work ethic, accountability, and a desire for personal and professional growth within the turf industry.
