We are seeking a dedicated Assistant Superintendent to support our Grounds Superintendent in maintaining exceptional playing conditions of our 27-hole championship golf course. The ideal candidate will play a key role in our ongoing efforts to enhance the golfer experience through precise turf management, staff leadership, and hands-on involvement in construction projects. This position requires a passion for golf course agronomy, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to our core values of excellence and community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Turf and Agronomy Management: Manage water content and moisture levels on a variety of variable poa/bent greens. Implement irrigation strategies, conduct soil testing, and perform cultural practices such as mowing, fertilizing, and aerating.
  • Staff Leadership and Development: Inspire, motivate, and manage a team of grounds crew members, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment aligned with our principles of honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship. Provide training, performance feedback, and lead by example to build a strong, community-oriented team.
  • Scheduling and HR Functions: Create and manage staff schedules to ensure efficient coverage during peak seasons. Oversee onboarding processes for new hires, including orientation, training, and compliance with club policies. Arrange uniforms and equipment for all team members to maintain a professional appearance.
  • Pesticide and IPM Compliance: Hold or be actively working toward a valid Ontario Pesticide Applicator's License and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) certification. Apply pesticides responsibly, monitor for pests and diseases, and implement sustainable IPM practices to protect our environmental sanctuary.
  • Construction and Improvement Projects: Actively participate in course construction and renovation initiatives. Our club is always taking steps to improve the golfer experience through various projects. This year alone we have rebuilt two green sites and are currently growing them in – these initiatives will continue over the next few years. Providing an great learning experience for anybody looking to build knowledge in golf course construction and renovations.
  • Daily Operations and Maintenance: Assist in routine daily course maintenance, preparation for tournaments, leagues, and events, tree care in our forested areas and pond management.
  • Other Duties: Support special projects, inventory management, and collaboration with other departments (e.g., golf operations and events) to enhance overall club operations.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education and Experience:  Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred. At least 2-3 years of hands-on experience in golf course maintenance.
  • Licensing: Valid Ontario Pesticide Applicator's License and IPM certification required, or demonstrated progress toward obtaining them.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform physically demanding tasks. Valid driver's license and willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays during the golf season (April-November).

Compensation Package:

  • $60,000 - $70,000 annual salary - based on experience
