Reports to: Golf Course Superintendent
Position Overview: The Assistant Superintendent assists in directing and participating in the overall maintenance and conditioning of the golf course. This role has the overall responsibility of collaborating with the Turf Team and supporting the Golf Course Superintendent in overseeing the completion of daily maintenance tasks to the highest level of quality possible, ensuring that conditions exceed minimum requirements. The Assistant Superintendent will provide guidance and ensure a healthy and safe environment and workplace for all.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in planning and implementing comprehensive turf management programs.
- Supervise and participate in daily course maintenance activities, including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, and pest control.
- Monitor and maintain the health and condition of the golf course, including greens, fairways, tees, roughs, and garden areas.
- Collaborate with the Golf Course Superintendent to develop and execute agronomic plans.
- Train and supervise a team of maintenance staff, providing guidance and support.
- Implement safety protocols and best practices in all maintenance operations.
- Assist in budgeting and resource management for the maintenance department.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in golf course maintenance.
- Strong knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, and pest control.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Ability to operate and maintain golf course maintenance equipment.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with environmental and safety regulations in golf course maintenance.
- Pesticide applicator's license (or ability to obtain one).
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Turf Management.
- Knowledge of turf pathology, identification, and proactive measures is an asset.
- 3-5 years of golf course experience.
- Valid Ontario Pesticide License.
- Experience leading a team in a golf course setting.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with tools, methods, and materials used in ground construction, maintenance, landscaping, and building maintenance.
- Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science, and the rules of golf.
- Working knowledge of electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers, and various types of pumps and systems, is an asset.
- Valid Ontario driver's license.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Detail-oriented and works with a high degree of accuracy.
Compensation: This is a full time 12 month a year position, salary will be based on experience and include health benefits and a RSP matching program.
